New Report Shows Significant Overlap Of Social And Console Gamers

by Matt Helgeson on Sep 28, 2011 at 07:37 AM

There's a perception that social and console gamers are two dramatically different demographics. A new report's findings shows that there is much more overlap between social and console gamers than we previously thought.

An article posted today on Industry Gamers details the findings of a report published by the research firm Interpret and developer RockYou. The report demonstrates that there is a surprisingly high percentage of gamers that both play social games on a regular basis and own a home console.

Breaking it down by system, the report found that 52 percent of social gamers own a Wii, 46 percent own an Xbox 360, while only 34 percent own a PlayStation 3. Interestingly the handheld market ownership rates were dramatically smaller, with 36 percent of social gamers regularly playing mobile games, and 29 and 18 percent owning a DS and PSP, respectively.

However, while console gamers are open to social games, 40 percent said they would never pay for one. Twelve percent would pay for a social game once, and 11 percent said they would pay a subscription fee to a social game.
