CyberConnect2 Handling Soulcalibur V's Story Mode

by Phil Kollar on Sep 23, 2011 at 02:40 PM

Soulcalibur V is being developed by Namco's internal Project Soul team, but apparently the publisher is looking outside the company for support with the game's story mode.

Andriasang reports that developer CyberConnect2 is working on the story mode for Soulcalibur V, including elements such as storyboarding, motion capture, and even the art itself. CyberConnect 2 is probably best known for the upcoming Capcom game Asura's Wrath as well as its previous work on the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja titles, another Namco series of fighting games.

For all the potentially interesting hooks in its lore, the Soulcalibur franchise has never had a particularly strong story. Perhaps the switch to an outside developer means we can look forward to a story mode with a little more depth this time around? Hopefully we'll have a chance to check out the single-player mode soon, but in the mean time take a look at Dan's hands-on preview of Soulcalibur V from Tokyo Game Show.
