Blizzard: Diablo "Feels Even Better" With Gamepad Control

by Adam Biessener on Sep 22, 2011 at 10:01 AM

Diablo 3 game director Jay Wilson told PC Gamer that the team's early experiments with a 360-like controller yielded promising results. Blizzard has yet to announce an official Diablo release on consoles, but we know the company has been staffing up to investigate the possibility, and the evidence pointing toward a console release for the series keeps mounting.

"With some of our early experiments in putting a direct control scheme into the game via a 360-like analogue controller, I’ve been ‘Oh this feels even better, with direct control.'" Wilson revealed.

If those experiments bear fruit, gamepad control could be on its way to Diablo III's PC version as well – eventually. "I can pretty much guarantee that if we decide to do a console version that we will look to support a pad on the PC," Wilson added. "But initially with release I don’t think we’ll be ready."

Regardless of what happens with these mad, heretical experiments going on at Blizzard, the upcoming Diablo III release looks like it will be unaffected. I have a hard time believing that I'd be playing Diablo III with a gamepad given the option anyway, despite Wilson's comments and the generally excellent Xbox Live Arcade version of Torchlight. Something tells me that precision Leap Attack targeting isn't going to be quite the same with an analog stick as it is with a mouse.
