Report: 3DS Getting Second Circle Pad, Monster Hunter

by Jeff Cork on Sep 07, 2011 at 03:49 AM

It looks as though rumblings of a 3DS add-on are true. Images from the latest issue of Famitsu are circulating online, and they show images of what appears to be a peripheral for Nintendo's new handheld that adds a second circle pad. This comes in conjunction with a report that an expanded version of the Wii's Monster Hunter 3 is coming to the system as well.

The peripheral apparently snaps onto the 3DS, and it adds an additional, slightly smaller, circle pad to the right of the system's existing face buttons. It also has its own pair of triggers since the add-on covers those already on the system. The peripheral definitely adds a bit of bulk to the handheld, but it ultimately looks to be nicely integrated in the unit. The new circle pad runs right to the edge of the system's front, which puts it slightly off kilter compared to its built-in counterpart, but it doesn't seem to be too troubling. After all, people adjusted to the Xbox 360 controller and its skewed sticks. There's no word yet on pricing or availability, though Nintendo will be holding a press conference early next week timed around Tokyo Game Show. According to the original rumor, this peripheral could cost $10.

Capcom is likely to talk about Monster Hunter 3G at TGS, and it's possible we may see this add on at the same time. We'll be there, and we'll let you know if there's anything new to report on the 3DS front.
