Is Deus Ex Racist? Square Enix Says No.

by Joe Juba on Sep 01, 2011 at 01:40 PM

A woman digging through the trash isn't an unexpected sight in the world of Deus Ex. However, when she starts talking, some players may find Letitia the Trash Lady disturbing for other reasons.

Following the attention garnered by the video below and accusations of racism, Square Enix commented to GamesRadar about the intention behind the character:

"Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a fictional story which reflects the diversity of the world's future population by featuring characters of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. While these characters are meant to portray people living in the year 2027, it has never been our intention to represent any particular ethnic group in a negative light."

Square Enix and Eidos Montreal may never have intended Letitia to be offensive, but how relevant is intent in a case like this? Watch the video below and judge for yourself.
