Portal 2 Sold More Copies On PC Than Consoles

by Jeff Marchiafava on Aug 30, 2011 at 10:12 AM

In a recent interview, Valve's CEO Gabe Newell casually revealed that the PC version of Portal 2 has been outselling its console brethren.

Newell dropped the surprising bit of info while discussing Valve's design philosophy with Gamasutra, stating that the company just tries to make good games without predicting whether they will appeal specifically to PC or console gamers.

"We can never predict," Newell said. "I mean we just try to build good games and then we tend to be surprised. Portal 2 did better on the PC than it did on the consoles; Left 4 Dead did better on the consoles than it did on the PC. So you know we don't try to guess, because we're not sure what value there is to guessing."

Newell didn't specify by how much the PC version of Portal 2 is outselling console versions, but Valve did reveal that Portal 2 has sold over 3 million copies back in June. The company has been notoriously secretive when it comes to Steam sales, so this scrap of information is likely all we'll get regarding Portal 2's performance across the different platforms, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Gamasutra's interview hits on a wide variety of other Valve-related projects and game design topics, so be sure to check it out in full.
