Digital Release Of Sonic CD Confirmed

by Jeff Marchiafava on Aug 25, 2011 at 06:36 AM

Today Sega confirmed Monday's rumor that Sonic CD is being re-released as a downloadable title, which is sure to please Sonic fans everywhere. Except one.

News of a possible Sonic CD re-release originally arose on Monday, when Microsoft's Major Nelson fingered the title as being available to play at Microsoft's PAX booth. Today's official announcement from Sega reveals that in addition to coming to XBLA, Sonic CD will also be released on PlayStation Network, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Windows PC, Android, and Windows Phone.

The title, which features the debut of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, is a favorite among Sonic fans, according to Sega's vice president of digital business, Haruki Satomi. "Ask any Sonic fan to name their favorite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists," Satomi said.

Rather than take Satomi's word for it, I asked our own resident Sonic fan, associate editor Tim Turi, if Sonic CD truly ranks near the top of his list of favorite Sonic games. "Nope," he said, without hesitation. When asked where it does rank on his list, Turi stated emphatically that it's "right above Sonic 3D Blast," which is "low" on the list, and well below every one of the original Genesis titles. He also stated that he realizes his negative opinion of Sonic CD puts him at odds with most Sonic fans, but Turi refuses to bow to the pressure of public opinion no mater how alone he may be – an important character trait for any Sonic fan.

Sonic CD will be available in late 2011, but, as Major Nelson stated earlier this week, a playable version will make its public debut at Microsoft's booth at PAX starting tomorrow.
