PlayStation 3 Update Adds Auto Trophy Sync, Online Game Saves

by Jeff Cork on Aug 10, 2011 at 07:15 AM

If you've fired up your PS3 today, you've probably already downloaded the system's latest firmware update. Version 3.70 adds a few nifty features to the console, with one major caveat: You'll have to be a member of the paid PlayStation Plus service to enjoy two of them.

Sony says that more and more PS3 owners are using the console for its video capabilities, and some of the enhancements are focused on that functionality. First and foremost, the XMB interface is getting a special TV/Video Services category, which is host to applications such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, and VUDU. Blu-ray playback is also getting a boost, with additional lossless audio output support and 3D support for some special features.

Two of the other main enhancements are likely to be more controversial. Update 3.70 adds online save-game backups and automatic trophy syncing. That is, it does if you're a member of the PlayStation Plus service. If you haven't yet coughed up the annual $49.99 fee, you'll have to make your own backup saves offline, and sync your trophies the old-fashioned manual way.

Does it make sense to make something this fundamental exclusive to PlayStation Plus, or do you feel that service should be reserved for what it was advertised for—giving exclusive in-game content and free downloads to members? Let us know what you think in the comments!
