Ghostbusters Influenced Super Mario Bros The Movie

by Ben Reeves on Aug 09, 2011 at 02:38 PM

You can listen to the GI staff watch the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film here, but if you aren’t burned out on the movie just yet you might like to read an interview with the film’s scriptwriter.

Ryan Hoss and Steven Applebaum from Smbmovie recently interviewed scriptwriter Parker Bennett about his role in the Super Mario Bros. film, and it provides an interesting look back at how the film was made. “Our whole angle was to try to make it that tone of Ghostbusters and go for the unexpected,” recalls Bennett. “The directors and us both shared this love of 'whatever your expectation is, we want to subvert that.' So, we did a lot of things just to keep people on their toes and to keep people [thinking] ‘What! They did that?’

“So, things like instead of mushrooms popping up [like] in the game, we created this fungus that’s destroying Dinohattan, and then we came up with a backstory that it’s the de-evolved King. In our draft it was King 'Karma,' just because it was 'karma' that was destroying the city.”

Bennett goes on to talk about what it was like creating a detailed backstory for Super Mario Bros, how difficult it was getting the directors to settle on a cohesive story, and why Dennis Hopper yelled at him on set. It’s a pretty fascinating look back at the film, and it makes an interesting complement to our Super Mario Bros. retrospective in issue 221.
