Holy Shrinkage! DC Universe Online Server Merge Starts Monday

by Andrew Reiner on Aug 07, 2011 at 10:22 AM

Most people who read comic books know that DC Comics is obsessed with multiple realities. Who can forget the day that Earth 2's Superman shook hands with Earth-Prime's Superman, or when Earth 15's Aquaman swam in the same sea as Earth 52's Aquaman! Starting this month, DC Comics is resetting its universe, which could see an end to its reality bending stories, and come tomorrow, DC Universe Online's 26 servers will merge into four "MegaServers": one for PS3, one for PC, and two others set up in the same way for the European market.

The merging, which will join players together and allow them to switch between PvE and PvP using phase shifters in the Hall of Doom or JLA Watchtower, begins with Europe's PC servers on Monday morning at 8AM CET, and hits US PC's on Wednesday at the same time. Next up, US PlayStation 3 servers will merge on Thursday, and Europe's PS3 on the following Monday. The merging will lead to the game being unavailable for approximately 10 to 14 hours. Once the merging is complete, DC Universe Online's Facebook page says that players will see "much larger populations" and there will be a "larger number of items in the Broker."

Since many players have the same names across multiple servers, some people will be prompted to select a new name (Captain PainURface is probably taken) when they connect after the new configuration is in place. For further server details and concerned fan comments, check out Sony Online's detailed write-up.
