PlayStation Vita Coming To U.S., Europe In 2012

by Jeff Cork on Aug 04, 2011 at 03:56 AM

Sony’s been cagey about when it will be releasing its PlayStation Vita handheld, but a recent statement by company VP Kazuo Hirai dumps a pail of water on hopes that it’ll be out here in 2011. Hirai says the system will be on sale in Japan by the end of 2011, but that it won’t be coming to North America and Europe until early 2012.

Hirai said he didn't categorize the news as a delay since the company had planned a phased worldwide rollout all along. This is consistent with what we've heard from multiple industry analysts, including Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter, who did not believe the Vita would hit stores in the U.S. this year.

According to the Associated Press, Hirai also took a shot at rival Nintendo’s recent troubles with its 3DS handheld. "We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai said. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."

The Vita is priced at $249 for the wi-fi version, and $299 for its cell-network enabled counterpart.
