One of the biggest innovations of this hardware generation is DLC. Developers can expand the life of their games and make some extra money…unless it's a Wii game. Fortunately, it looks like Nintendo's stance on DLC is changing.

According to a report from Andriasang, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata (who recently took a pay cut surrounding the 3DS price drop) answered an investor question about users paying for downloadable content. Iwata revealed that the 3DS and Wii U have paid item transactions systems in the works. This means more than just buying old-school games from the shop; it could allow games on Nintendo platforms to have the same kind of DLC seen on Xbox 360 and PS3.

However, don't expect Nintendo to use the system itself. Iwata thinks that pursuing paid downloadable content opportunities could damage the company's relationship with consumers. But at least Nintendo is being more attentive to the needs of its third-party partners who use DLC effectively.
