Will GTA V Use L.A. Noire's MotionScan Tech?
L.A. Noire's MotionScan facial animation capture system set a new standard in video games. Now, Team Bondi head Brendan McNamara says Rockstar is interested in using the groundbreaking technology in the next Grand Theft Auto game.
"I think they're looking at it for every game," he told PSM3. "As much as LA Noire is a huge game, Grand Theft Auto is incredibly huge, so you've got all the problems of how big the cast would be and how many lines would you have to record and all that kind of stuff. Obviously we'd like them to, and they're more than welcome to use MotionScan, but if they decide it's not right for that and want to use it for another game, then that's fine too."
This is an interesting development for a couple of reasons. One, the possibility of having L.A. Noire quality facial animation in a Grand Theft Auto game is an exciting proposition. Two, the fact that McNamara is speculating about a further relationship with Rockstar seems at odds with reports that Team Bondi and Rockstar clashed frequently during the development of L.A. Noire. The MotionScan technology was created by Team Bondi's sister company Depth Analysis.
