Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski shocked the world today by saying that if Gears of War 3 sells well, Epic would likely be open to continuing to work on its blockbuster franchise. We'll understand if you have to sit down after hearing this news.

"We’re business people. Gears 1 and 2 sold about 6 million copies, so if this game comes out and, God willing, sells 8 or 10 million it would be completely dumb to not do another one, right? It’s just business 101," Bleszinski told RipTen.

Bleszinski didn't go so far as to speculate in any but the vaguest terms on the future of Gears of War past the upcoming end of the trilogy, but he opened the door to more than just big-budget HD shooters. "The key is figuring out what’s appropriate. What makes sense for this connected world that we’re moving into?" he mused.

I don't mean to be a Gears hater by any means here – however commercial realities factor into Epic's decisions, the developer has shown its ability to make creative, entertaining games many times over. But acting surprised that a company isn't planning on throwing away the years of marketing, branding, creative, and community building that go into creating a top-shelf IP like Gears of War is obnoxious.

I mean, come on. Was anyone shocked in the slightest that Microsoft pushed Halo past the original planned trilogy? Of course not.

None of this means I don't want to play more Gears of War, by the way. As long as Bleszinski and company can keep delivering quality entertainment, I'm more than happy to consume it.
