Square Enix Targets Deus Ex Leakers With Lawsuit

by Matt Bertz on Jul 06, 2011 at 01:52 PM

The Eidos parent company filed a lawsuit last month against 15 unknown Italians over allegations that they illegally accessed a preview copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution via Steam and distributed copies on the web.

As reported by Patent Arcade, Square Enix's sleuths traced the leak back to Giochi per il Mio Computer, a publication owned by Sprea Editori. Instead of blaming the company for the leak, Square Enix believes its account was hacked by the mystery defendants "from an IP address that was not associated with Sprea Editori or GMC."

If the investigators ever get around to identifying the 15 hackers, Square Enix is seeking $5,000 in monetary damage, a to-be-determined amount for punitive damages, and the recoupment of any gains, profits, or "unjust enrichment" the criminals obtained from their illicit grift.
