Offering A Superior Online Experience "Not Our Goal," Says Miyamoto

by Dan Ryckert on Jun 23, 2011 at 12:12 PM

Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC owners have been enjoying excellent online play for years, but Nintendo's online offerings have typically left a bad taste in gamers' mouths. Those hoping for a significant improvement once the Wii U comes out might be disappointed to hear a recent Shigeru Miyamoto statement, though.

"We're not going to sit here and say that our goal is to become the number one online gaming company, because that's not our goal," said the longtime Nintendo designer in an interview with MTV. "But, understanding that the types of experiences our consumers like to play do often contain elements to them that can be improved or may even require an online connection and also knowing that the system is going to have a browser I think suggests that obviously internet and internet connectivity is going to be very important for the system."

If Nintendo thinks a web browser is the top priority for gamers when it comes to their console's online capabilities, then they might be more out of touch than many fear. He does suggest that the Wii U will feature friend lists that let you see what your buddies are playing, but offered no specifics on whether or not the much-loathed friend code system will be finally put to rest.
