Smash Bros. On Wii U Is A Long Ways Off

by Ben Reeves on Jun 23, 2011 at 11:24 AM

During E3, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata dropped the news that the Smash Bros. franchise would be making its way to the 3DS and Wii U systems. But if you’re hoping to hear more about those titles anytime soon, you might be out of luck.

During his weekly column in the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai explain how his team has been too busy working on the new Kid Icarus: Uprising for 3DS that they haven't had time to start thinking about the future of the Smash Bros. brand.

"Right now, we're devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus," Sakurai stated in the article. "We've got no plans whatsoever – we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."

If you’re curious to know which system Sakurai plans to start working on first, you might be interested to know that he went on to write, “Iwata asked us if wanted to make the next Smash Bros. on the Wii U or 3DS, and my thought was that we had to go on both platforms.”

We’re eager to hear more about what that could mean. Unfortunately, we suspect that it might be a few years before Nintendo is willing to release any relevant details about the next Smash Bros. game.
