Sony Not Pressured By Wii U To Rush PS4 Announcement

by Tim Turi on Jun 21, 2011 at 06:09 AM

Nintendo’s announcement of the Wii U during E3 2011 this year marked the first of the three console manufacturers to present new hardware. Maybe you’d think a fire has been lit under the rear of Sony to get a new game machine out there, but such is not the case. Sony boss Jack Tretton recently implied that nobody should be holding their breath for a PS4 announcement.

"I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said 'Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.'" Tretton told Forbes.

"What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3," said Tretton. "We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long runway behind it."

Tretton believes that the PS3 is just now “hitting its stride,” so a new console announcement isn’t likely just around the corner. However, we’d be foolish to think Sony isn’t at least in the early phases of working on a new system.
