Gran Turismo Academy Graduate Places Second In Le Mans Race

by Matt Helgeson on Jun 14, 2011 at 06:22 AM

Polyphony Digital is serious about racing – so serious that the Gran Turismo developer partnered with NIssan a few years ago to create the Nissan PlayStation GT Academy. The Academy gives the chance for 16 winners of an online Gran Turismo tournament to go to compete behind the wheels of real race cars for the chance to become a professional race car driver. Three years after winning the competition (which is planning another installment for this year), driver Lucas Ordonez (second from right) and his team placed second in this year's Le Mans 24 Hours race.

After winning the GT Academy competition, Ordonez had raced in the Dubai 24 Hours race with a strong performance that prompted Nissan to bring him on as a team member.  Ordonez plans on continuing his racing career in the future. Here's a statement from Ordonez.

"Today all of my dreams came true.

Three years ago I won an amazing prize but never in my wildest dreams did I think that it would take me all the way to the Le Mans podium. I have been on the biggest adventure you could ever imagine and I must thank Nissan and PlayStation for creating GT Academy!

I also have to thank my two teachers, Franck and Soheil, from who I have learnt so much, and of course the Signatech Nissan boss, Philippe Sinault. Finally I must thank my family and friends for putting up with me while I pursue my dream. It will take a while for this to sink in for me but so far it is the most amazing feeling."
