Nintendo Demonstrates Third-Party Support For Wii U

by Adam Biessener on Jun 07, 2011 at 07:20 AM

Nintendo showed a video at its E3 2011 press conference highlighting several high-profile third-party franchises appearing on its just-announced Wii U console.

"This is already more third-party support than the Wii had in like six years," chuckled GI's Dan Ryckert at the news. I tend to agree.

The full list of third-party franchises Nintendo is already confirming for its console:

  • Darksiders (THQ)
  • Dirt (Codemasters)
  • Aliens: Colonial Marines (Sega)
  • Ghost Recon Online (Ubisoft)
  • Metro: Last Light (THQ)
  • Tekken (Namco Bandai)
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (Tecmo)

EA CEO John Riccitiello came on stage to affirm his company's support for the platform as well, calling it "the best platform Nintendo has ever given us." He gave examples for how Madden and Battlefield could use the new controller, but didn't come out and say that those games were coming to Wii U.

Most of the teases for these games looked like the kind of HD experiences you can get on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Tekken, however, had the capability to draw on fighters' faces with the touch screen and design decals for their clothing.

Ghost Recon Online is an interesting announcement, as Ubisoft has already announced that title as a free-to-play online shooter. Could Nintendo be embracing microtransactions and real online play with Wii U?
