Lara Croft Raids Microsoft's Press Conference

by Joe Juba on Jun 06, 2011 at 07:11 AM

Crystal Dynamics took the stage at Microsoft's E3 press conference to showcase a demo of the new Tomb Raider, highlighting the team's approach to rebooting the franchise.

The demo is basically what we saw for our Tomb Raider cover story, but that doesn't make it any less exciting. It begins with Lara hanging upside down in a cave, and after she struggles free, she limps through dark tunnels with a torch in hand. She wades through water, has her torch extinguished by a waterfall, and is almost thrown over a cliff as she runs from some crazed pursuers.

The whole sequence is quite cinematic, demonstrating the game's impressive graphical chops while conveying the team's new vision for Lara and the series' action. While there didn't seem to be much opportunity to veer off the rails in the demo, keep in mind that it is just a small chunk of the game designed to give a general sense of the gameplay.

The franchise has been fairly successful in the recent installments, but hopefully this revised interpretation has what it takes to bring Lara into the ranks of the industry's heavy hitters.
