Kinect Fun Labs: Now Available On Xbox Live

by Adam Biessener on Jun 06, 2011 at 08:02 AM

Kinect project lead Kudo Tsunoda and his...iconic...sunglasses took the stage at Microsoft's E3 press conference to introduce a new addition to the Xbox Live dashboard: Kinect Fun Labs. These little apps are available to anyone logged into Xbox Live and can do things like let you draw in 3D with your fingers, scan yourself in to create an avatar, or scan in an object and manipulate it onscreen.

The first app shown takes pictures of your face and body to create an avatar that looks more like you. Unfortunately, it still looks like a Microsoft avatar.

The second app combines 3D pictures and tracks your finger as you move around in real space, drawing a 3D line in the picture that follows your digit.

Finally, the Object Capture app takes pictures of the front and back of an object and creates a 3D virtual object from the photos. You can then jump around and wave your arms about to make the object move and distort onscreen.

Kinect Fun Labs is live right now (according to Tsunoda anyway; I'm on a laptop at the LA Convention Center so I'll leave it to someone in the comments to confirm that their Xbox is able to load the apps), so check it out for yourself at your leisure.

Jeff and Phil liveblogged all over the Microsoft conference, so check them out. Or head to the E3 hub for more E3 than you could hold in two cupped hands.
