New 3DS Features For Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater (And Yoshi??)

by Matt Helgeson on Jun 02, 2011 at 02:26 PM

Konami's pre-E3 press video just went live, and it kicked off with some interesting information and footage of the Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater remake for 3DS.

Creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana, a veteran of nearly every game in the series, spoke about some of the ways the team hopes to take full advantage of the 3DS hardware with Snake Eater.

Snake Eater itself was chosen for the handheld because he felt that the lush jungle foliage was the perfect setting to show off the unit's 3D depth of field -- something he hopes the game will demonstrate better than any 3Ds title to date.

The game also takes advantage of some of the 3DS' other functionality, specifically the camera and internal gyroscope. The camera is used in a new feature called "Photo Camo," which allows you to take a picture (the example given was a flower) and then use that photo to create a new in-game camouflage pattern.

The gyroscope is used at certain points in the game -- climbing a tree or crossing a rickety bridge, for example -- where you must "balance" Snake as he traverses the obstacle.

The trailer shown after the interview with Matsuhana also showed how the game will use the unit's dual screens. While there may be more to tell later, so far it looks as though map and inventory functions are relegated to the bottom screen while gameplay occurs on the top, 3D screen.

Overall, the game looked very impressive graphically, and spoke well of the 3DS's technological horsepower. Oh yeah, and at the end, Snake spotted a little dude that might be familiar to you...none other than Yoshi! We wonder if this is one of many Nintendo-oriented Easter eggs in the game.

We'll no doubt have hands on with the game at E3, so stay tuned for more. Until then, check out some of the screenshots we've posted of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D.
