Sony Puts Pricetag On PSN Breach
Pundits have been...punditing (?) about what the recent PSN security breach would cost Sony, and the company has just come out with its own figure.
Sony told investors that by the end of the 2012 fiscal year (which ends March 31, 2012), the breach will cost the company 14 billion yen, or a little more than $170 million.
The company also mentioned other losses in its 2011 fiscal year, with the tsunami taking up 17 billion yen ($208 million) in 2011 alone. Sony says it expected to post a 70 billion yen profit, but the tsunami, PSN, and a tax write-off quickly gobbled that up and put them in a 260 billion yen loss.
Although Sony's PSN estimate goes through the 2012 fiscal year, you have to wonder if there are other hidden costs that the company will have to bare. Are there gamers who will abandon the system or refuse to buy stuff from the PSN store? Publishers or developers who later demand monetary compensation for their own lost revenue?
