See How Rare Played With Its Food

by Jeff Cork on May 18, 2011 at 04:02 AM

Last month, Rare released the Calorie Challenge DLC for Kinect Sports. The add-on let players sweat their way through a variety of sporting challenges as they took on six edible rivals. The studio has posted a few concept sketches on its official blog, providing some insight on how the artists tackled a strange problem: How do you anthropomorphize food?

The first of the two-part entry focuses on rivals Chunky Chocolate, Peppy Pizza, and Steady Celery. On first blush the whole thing sounds kind of silly, but it does make you think about aspects of development that you might otherwise ignore. For instance, Peppy Pizza originally had front-facing arms, but they proved too difficult to animate. The solution? Flip the whole danged slice upside-down. Check out the post for more details. It's interesting stuff, even if you couldn't possibly care less about Kinect, food-themed mascots, or celery.
