What Went Wrong At Square Enix?

by Joe Juba on May 14, 2011 at 01:29 PM

Square Enix had some bad news for investors this week, mainly involving drastic financial losses for the company. CEO Yoichi Wada had some comments explaining the fiscal year's 12 billion yen loss.

Basically, it boils down to the fact that Final Fantasy XIV was a disaster, and that the company cancelled a few projects that were already in development. According to Andriasang, Wada admitted "Our game development has become weaker than expected. Revamping it will take one or two years."

One of the major strategies the company will explore is putting a greater emphasis on social games and cell phone apps. While those certainly don't deliver big-budget thrills like a core Final Fantasy title, anything Square Enix needs to do to stay afloat is probably a good idea.
