[Update] Report: More Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Details Leak

by Matt Helgeson on May 13, 2011 at 08:56 AM

[Update]

Well, as expected it looks like at least some of the information published about Modern Warfare 3 this morning is real. Infinity Ward chief strategist Robert Bowling just posted a response to the leak on his Twitter page, saying:

"A lot of hype & a lot of leaked info on #MW3, some still accurate, some not. To avoid spoiling the experience, I'd wait for the real reveal."

We will have to wait to see which information is accurate and which is inaccurate, but it seems to safe to say that we know a good deal more about Modern Warfare 3 than we did last night.

Note: Couldn't provide the link to Twitter as the service is overloaded right now but wanted to get the information out there]

[Original Story]

Kotaku reports that it has obtained substantial information about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 from several anonymous sources.

The site has three stories up regarding the game (links below), which contain concept art and what appear to be screens taken from some point in the game's development process. Here are the basics of what we know so far:

Kotaku suggests the game is being worked on by three studios – Infinity Ward, Raven Software, and Sledgehammer Games (a new Activision studio formed by veterans of EA's Dead Space team also believed to be working on a separate Call of Duty title).

According to the report, the game opens moments after the end of Modern Warfare 2, and shows the Russians invading Manhattan in an explosive battle scene. As in past titles, players will experience a globetrotting adventure played from the perspective of many different characters from a variety of military forces. The single-player campaign will feature many familiar characters from past Modern Warfare games, including Price, Soap, Nikolai, and Markarov, in addition to two new characters named "Frost" and "Sandman." Locales include the aforementioned New York City, Paris, London, Sierra Leone, and Hamburg, Germany. The single-player campaign has 15 missions, which feature sequences where you play as a tank gunner and an AC-130 gunner. If you want more details – and basically the entire story of the game spoiled for you, check out the single-player story linked below.

Multiplayer, as always, is a focus. Kotaku reports the existence of 20 multiplayer maps, although it says it's possible that some of these with either be cut from the game or released later as DLC. The names of the new maps include Mogadishu, Underground, Alps, Coast, Brooklyn, and Meteora, suggesting a wide variety of urban and rural areas. There will be two new variations in the Spec Ops mode as well – Mission and Survival. Survival, as you would expect, lets players test their skills against wave after wave of enemy combatants.

Note: We have no official confirmation on this story from Activision. We have asked for a response and will update the story when we receive word. Right now, we have no way of knowing how much of the information in Kotaku's story is correct. We'll find out more in the build-up to E3.
