Mortal Kombat, Xbox 360 Top April NPD Charts

by Matt Helgeson on May 12, 2011 at 02:17 PM

Many had wondered whether the Mortal Kombat still had enough juice to decapitate Portal 2 at retail. Well, wonder no more. Selling over 900,000 units, the game tops this months NPD sales charts, edging out Valve's vaunted puzzle/shooter.

Further down the list, the LEGO series continued to show its retail might, with LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars coming it at number three. Other notables included EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters and Crysis 2, which landed at five and six, respectively. Mainstays Call of Duty: Black Ops, Just Dance 2, and Pokemon White also kept their top ten streaks alive

Total game industry sales came in at an impressive $9612 million, besting a total of $802.4 million posted during the same quarter last year. Hardware accounted for $279.9 million of the total, up from $249.5 million last year. Software soared to $503.2 million on the back of a strong batch of new product, up from $398.5 million last year. Finally, accessories accounted for $147.6 million, up from $123.5 million last year.

Microsoft released some of its own data, revealing that Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, with 297,000 units sold. This represented a 60 percent growth over last year. And, although NPD does not show individual platforms in its charts, Microsoft said that half of the top 10 selling individual software SKUs were 360 titles, including Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, Crysis 2, Tiger Woods, and Michael Jackons: The Experience.

Sony also had a strong month, moving 204,300 PlayStation 3 units in April. No word yet from Nintendo, which makes us wonder if it was a weak month for Wii and 3DS sales. [Update] Unofficial reports are now circulating that Nintendo sold 172,000 Wii units and a disappointing 194,000 3DS units.
