If you're a modder, Crytek has some news that might be of interest to you: Crytek is releasing a pair of tools that by August that will give you complete access to Crysis 2's game engine.

Crytek president and CEO Cevat Yerli has posted an open letter to the gaming community announcing his company's plans, which will be rolling out in two parts. First, in early summer Crytek will be releasing an editor for Crysis 2 that will let players create their own maps, models, and more. The bigger news is that in August, the company will make its CryENGINE 3 SDK fully available at no cost to users. "This will be a complete version of our engine, including C++ code access, our content exporters (including our LiveCreate real-time pipeline), shader code, game sample code from Crysis 2, script samples, new improved Flowgraph and a whole host of great asset examples, which will allow teams to build complete games from scratch for PC," Yerli writes. If you're new to game development, Yerli says that complete documentation will be available at crymod.com when the site relaunches.

In November 2009, Crytek announced that it was giving free licenses of the engine away to educational facilities. With this announcement, you won't have to be affiliated with a school to access the tools.
