Sony Video Shows Future Of NGP Augmented Reality Games

by Matt Helgeson on Apr 10, 2011 at 05:20 AM

Sony's PlayStation Blog posted an interesting minidocumentary, documenting the company's efforts at creating augmented reality games over the years. Although the AR game cards included in Nintendo's 3DS have gotten a lot of attention, it's important to give credit where credit is due: Sony's senior researcher Richard Marks has been a pioneer in the field since the release of the original EyeToy for PlayStation 2.

In the video, Marks talks about some of his past efforts at creating AR games, and how his approach has changed over the years. You'll see footage of past Sony AR franchises like EyeToy: Play and Invizimals. However, the most intriguing part of the clip comes towards the end, when Marks and his colleagues cast their eye to the future, particularly Sony's NGP. Marks says that the processing power of the NGP should allow them to do AR games without the use of cards. A brief clip of a golf game (tentatively titled Hot Shots Golf Next ) is shown, where the player actually "swings" the NGP in his  hands to strike the ball in the game. There's also a brief clip of a project codenamed "Reality Fighters" where two combatants (one dressed as a Roman gladiator, one in a banana suit) engaged in a fight on top of a real-world kitchen table. We can't wait to see what else Marks and co. have in store for us on NGP.
