GameStop To Create Gaming Tablet?

by Matt Helgeson on Apr 10, 2011 at 01:30 PM

In an interview with CNBC, GameStop president Tony Bartel revealed that the game retailer intends to begin selling tablets equipped for purchase of digital games through its newly acquired Impulse digital distribution channel or streaming them through the company's Spawn Labs service.

Bartel did not rule out the possibility of the company creating its own tablet if no appropriate deal could be reached with a manufacturer. Speaking with CNBC's Chris Morris, Bartel said, "If we can work with our partners and the OEMs [original equpiment manufacturers] and they come up with a great table that is enabled with a great gaming experience and coupled with a bluetooth controller, then there's no need to go out and develop our own. But if we can't find one that's great for gaming, then we will create our own." He also said GameStop will begin taking trade-ins on tablets in the near future.
