[UPDATE] Wolves Invade Minecraft

by Jeff Marchiafava on Mar 31, 2011 at 08:00 AM

[UPDATE]: The newest update to Minecraft is now in the wild, and includes those adorable pet wolves we told you about, as well as a couple of other interesting additions. Update 1.4 doesn't contain a lot of changes, but they're appreciated nonetheless.

In addition to wolves, sleeping in your bed will reset your spawn point (no more having to create waypoints if you wandered away from your spawn point before building your home); spiders will no longer trample your crops; and you can hold onto ladders with the Shift key to prevent accidentally falling to your death. Oh, and you can make cookies now, too.

Update 1.4 also adds framework for statistics and achievements, but Notch says they won't be implemented until the next update.

[ORIGINAL STORY]: Today Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson announced that wolves are being added to the game, and they look downright adorable. Check out a video of them below.

Here's what Notch wrote about the new creatures on his blog:

"Jens spent most of the week working on a new mob; the wolf! You can tame it and order it to follow you around, and it’ll work as a pet. They’re fairly rare, but they won’t despawn once you’ve tamed them."

A new animal that can double as a pet? I'm so looking forward to the Dances With Wolves parodies on YouTube. Until then, check out this early glimpse.
