Strategy Analytics: PS3 Tops 360, Wii Sales Will Continue To Decline

by Meagan Marie on Mar 31, 2011 at 12:12 PM

Data firm Strategy Analytics is reporting that while Xbox 360 sales dominate the PlayStation 3 in the United States, that the latter is performing stronger on a global scale.

Taking a snapshot of the end of 2010, Strategy Analytics relays that the Nintendo Wii maintains its place as the king of consoles worldwide, with 75.5 million active units to date. The PlayStation 3 plays middleman with 43.4 million units sold, and the Xbox 360 weighs in at 42.9 million.

The firm notes that Microsoft’s reach falls short in European and Asian markets, lowering its overall global adoption rate, and that the number accounts for any boon in sales that corresponded with the launch of Kinect. The report estimates that global sales for the Xbox 360 will clock in at 13.7 million units by for 2011, with the PlayStation 3 moving 15.7 million consoles for the year.

Lastly, Strategy Analytics expects that Nintendo Wii sales will continue to decline, resulting in the perfect storm for Nintendo to launch a home console successor.
