Wizardry Returns, Coming To PSN This Spring

by Adam Biessener on Mar 23, 2011 at 01:12 PM

A new game in the venerable RPG series developed by Japanese studio Acquire, Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls, is releasing on PlayStation Network this spring.

Originally created by Sir-Tech Software in 1981, Wizardry is one of the very first computer RPGs ever created. The series is often cited as an inspiration by modern RPG developers, particularly Japanese creatives. Wizardry has appeared over the years on everything from the original Macintosh to the NES, Windows, PC Engine, Famicom, Game Boy and more in various incarnations.

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls was released in Japan previously under the name Wizardry: Torawareshi Tamashii no Meiky? (Dungeon of Imprisoned Souls). It follows the series' traditions as a first-person 3D grid-based dungeon crawl. Players will take a six-member party, created from any combination of five races and eight classes, through an "extensive and grueling" trek.

Developer Acquire is primarily known for its PSone Tenchu: Stealth Assassins series as well as its newer Way of the Samurai franchise. You may remember relatively new publisher Xseed (founded in 2004) for bringing several cult classic RPGs to North America, including Ys, Wild Arms, and Lunar.

Wizardry was the first game I ever played. No superlatives are too grand to describe its contributions to computerized RPGs. While I don't have much of a read on the developer, Xseed has done a good job with hardcore RPGs in the past, so I'm hopeful for this one.
