Have you experienced 3D…In A Car?!

by Jeff Cork on Mar 16, 2011 at 09:42 AM

We got our 3DS units in the office yesterday, and we’ve been having a lot of fun with them. The 3D effect is pretty cool, and the device is a well-built chunk of hardware. That said, I was curious to see how it performed in more real-world situations. In other words, I wanted to see how well it would work in a car.

I’m a pretty resilient guy. I can read during road trips without getting headaches or other issues. Boats? No problem. Even the 3DS’ hallmark visual effect hasn’t been problematic during marathon sessions of Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition — sessions where I flouted Nintendo’s recommendations to take regular breaks.

Apparently, the 3DS and a moving vehicle combine to create something akin to kryptonite. After just a few minutes of playing Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars I started feeling kind of lousy. My eyes felt as though they’d been pumped up with fluid and I felt queasy. I hadn’t experienced that sensation before or after playing the same game in a more traditional chair+stable room environment, so I suspect that I just found a great new way to get myself sick. Awesome!

Your mileage may vary, of course, but it’s something to keep in mind if you plan on using your 3DS on cars, buses, trains, or rocket ships. Of course, there’s always that adjustable 3D depth slider if you start feeling like garbage after a while.
