Kinect Fights Autism

by Matthew Kato on Mar 15, 2011 at 10:50 AM

Researchers at the University of Minnesota are using Kinect to conduct research into things like Autism and OCD.

The researchers, headed by professor Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos, are using Kinect to monitor children's body movements. Abnormal body movements, in conjunction with consultation with the parents, could be signs of things like autism, OCD, and attention deficit disorder. Papanikolopoulos thinks that using Kinect could not only provide better data than current methods, but also save a lot of money.

"Something we can do three years down the line we can do it today because of technology that was destined for the gaming industry," said Papnikolopoulos. "I don't think Microsoft has realized that [the Kinect] is something that could change medicine."
