Netflix, 3D Movie Trailers Coming To 3DS

by Jeff Cork on Mar 02, 2011 at 05:46 AM

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime just announced that streaming video is coming to the 3DS, by way of Netflix. His reveal came during Satoru Iwata's keynote presentation at GDC. In addition to that announcement, Fils-Aime revealed that 3D movie trailers will be available on the handheld.

Your progress in a Netflix video will transfer from 3DS to Wii and vice versa, and you'll be able to watch videos on the two systems at the same time.

Other streaming video content will also be available through a new short-form video service, which will be operated by Nintendo. Fils-Aime mentioned music videos and "comedy" content for the short-form content, though no specific talent was named. If that doesn't float your boat, you can always record your own 3D videos via the unit's built-in cameras.

It looks as though the 3DS could be a crucial way to get 3D content from Hollywood to consumers who haven't plunked down the cash to buy a 3D TV. Interesting stuff.
