Apple Unveils iPad 2

by Jeff Marchiafava on Mar 02, 2011 at 07:02 AM

Apple has just revealed the iPad 2, along with a ton of information about the new device during the company's iPad 2 announcement.

Here are the main talking points for the iPad 2:

  • The iPad 2 is lighter, coming in at 1.3 pounds versus the original's 1.5 pounds
  • It's also 33% thinner: the device is just 8.8mm, compared to the iPad's 13.4mm width, and the iPhone 4's 9.3mm width.
  • The iPad 2 will feature rear and front cameras for video
  • It's packing a new A5 chip, which features a 2X CPU, and allows for 9X faster graphics
  • The new chip won't hurt battery life: It will feature a 10 hour battery life, and a month of standby.
  • The iPad 2 will be the exact same price as the original iPad
  • The device will ship on March 11, and be available in over 26 countries by March 25.

Apple has also revealed what it's calling a "smart cover," a magnetic cover that will auto-align to the front of the iPad 2, and will automatically put the device into sleep mode when it's attached, and wake it up when you take the cover off. Apple will also be selling a $39 connector, which will allow support 1080p video output via HDMI, and will allow you to charge the pad while using it. The connector will support every app, as well as rotation. All in all is should be enough to make every iPad owner green with envy/Hulk rage.
