Without any help from Microsoft, PC modders have managed to do all kinds of crazy fiddling with the Kinect peripheral. Now the company is finally releasing the official SDK (software development kit) for non-commercial use.

Microsoft will release the SDK this spring as a free download. The press release promises that the SDK "will give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to key pieces of the Kinect system, such as the audio technology, system application programming interfaces, and direct control of the Kinect sensor itself."

Only a few more months until a fresh batch of YouTube videos showing off wild Kinect apps hits the Internet!
