Valve's Gabe Newell Drops Some Knowledge On The Kids

by Jeff Cork on Feb 19, 2011 at 03:42 AM

The Sports and Entertainment Marketing class at Tippecanoe Valley High School got a special treat recently, courtesy of Valve's CEO, Gabe Newell. Newell spoke to the class via teleconferencing, the contents of which were later posted on YouTube. During his 40-minute talk, Newell spoke about his company's history, digital distribution, and more.

Some of the more interesting points include how digital distribution challenges sales expectations that were established in the traditional retail environment. For instance, when games are discounted on Steam by 75 percent, gross revenue increases by 40 percent over the regular price. Newell also floats an idea where people are penalized for bad online behavior by having to watch more ads, and productive team members are rewarded with free content.

Learn about all this and more in the video below.
