NFL team owners are preparing to lockout the players and things are looking grim for football resuming in the fall. Due to this owner/labor unrest, EA Sports and the NFL are making their own preparations for the upcoming year.

The pair have extended Madden NFL's exclusivity deal through 2013, which was supposed to end in 2012. The deal is a way for EA Sports to get compensation for the fact that, should the upcoming season be interrupted, Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 12 – which the company has promised will be released – will likely lose money in sales and other areas. According to the Sports Business Journal Daily, EA is also getting a reduced licensing fee for the year.
