No North Korea In Japanese Version Of Homefront

by Joe Juba on Feb 05, 2011 at 11:07 AM

Since Homefront is about North Korea invading America, it might seem impossible to remove North Korea from the game...but that's essentially what's happening for the Japanese release.

Japan's CERO ratings board has guidelines regarding how games reference existing people and countries, which requires some changes be made for the Japanese version of the game. Specifically, publisher Spike has removed or changed direct references to North Korea and Kim Jong-Il.

The official Japanese Homefront site lists the changes as follows (as translated by andriasang):

  • In one live action sequence in the game's opening movie that depicts North Korean leader Kim Jong-il as having died, the image of Kim Jong-il has been removed.
  • In scenes that have been deemed malicious to an existing country, said country is now referred to as "A Certain Country to the North."
  • In scenes that have been deemed malicious to an existing person, said person is now referred to as "Northern Leader."

Kind of takes the bite out of the whole thing, doesn't it?
