NGP Could Get UMD Games Without The UMD

by Joe Juba on Jan 31, 2011 at 06:36 AM

When it unveiled the NGP last week, Sony said that users would be able to get downloadable PSP games on the system. But what about all of those PSP games that are UMD only? Sony is working on a solution for those, too.

Speaking to Japanese blog Gigazine (as translated by andriasang), Sony said it plans to release some UMD games (the ones that aren't available for download on the PlayStation Store) on the NGP's new card-based format. Additionally, the company says it is continuing to work with developers to get more UMD games up for download on the PlayStation Store so the card-based format won't be necessary.

However, Sony also pointed out that some PSP games won't be available on NGP at all. The company also didn't have any concrete solutions for users to get the UMD games they already own on the new format, which means some re-buying may be necessary.

It may not be complete backwards compatibility, but it's better than nothing.
