Mortal Kombat: Rebirth Trailer Leak Was A Mistake

by Ben Reeves on Jan 31, 2011 at 12:08 PM

Last year, the trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth created a lot of buzz, but no one seemed to know where it had come from or why it was made. Almost a year later, the truth is finally out.

Director Kevin Tancharoen recently talked with Gamasutra about his Mortal Kombat web series. In the interview, Tancharoen explains how he’d hoped to use the film to convince Warner Bros. to allow him take the reins on a full-blown Mortal Kombat motion picture. More interesting, however, is the fact that the trailer was never supposed to leak.

“I am not the most technically savvy YouTube person,” admits Tancharoen. "It was still in its rough phase, but I couldn’t send a 2GB file over email, so my friend said I could create a private page on YouTube and sent it to him to review. It turns out it wasn’t that private.”

Of course, the video went viral and score over 5 million views on YouTube, which convinced Warner Bros. to allow Tancharoen to direct a Mortal Kombat web series. That nine-episode series is set to start filming in Vancouver in February. Hopefully, sections of that film will also leak, because we’re eager to get a sneak peek.
