3G Details Surface For Sony's NGP

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jan 27, 2011 at 11:51 AM

When Sony officially unveiled the NGP yesterday, we didn't have much information on its 3G functions. Today we have learned a few more tidbits.

Speaking with Eurogamer, SCEE CEO Andrew House stated that while every model of the NGP will feature built-in Wi-Fi, only one will feature 3G connectivity, and that there will be some form of cost associated with using the 3G service. He also stated that simultaneous play over 3G will "depend very much on the degree of data traffic that's being driven by that online game." Instead, House is stressed to Eurogamer the potential of asynchronous gameplay, where gamers don't have to necessarily be playing at the same time in order to interact with each other. The PlayStation Store can be accessed via both Wi-Fi and 3G.

Also at the event, Hideo Kojima touted the NGP's ability for cloud-computing, which he suggests may allow gamers to play PS3 titles on the go. "What I'd like to realize is playing [a game] on your PS3, and when you go out, you put the game on your NGP, and when you come back home, you can once again use your PS3 and large screen TV." Kojima wasn't revealing any specifics about this potential functionality, but said he will have more to say about it at this year's E3.
