THQ Almost Signed Respawn

by Matt Helgeson on Jan 14, 2011 at 06:05 AM

THQ head Danny Bilson has stated that the company has ambitions to compete with the big boys in the video game industry, and was extremely close to signing a deal with ex-Call of Duty heads Jason West and Vince Zampella's new studio Respawn Entertainment. However, a sticking point in the contract resulted in the would-be partnership falling apart.

In a story on Wired.com, both Bilson and West and Zampella said that they had positive talks, but ultimately neither side would budge on Respawn's insistence that the studio own its own IP.

“My responsibility to our stockholders and to my CEO and the company is to build an IP library,” Bilson said. Letting West and Zampella own the rights to their game, he said, would “open the doors for everyone else to say, ‘I wanna own it too.’”

For his part, Zampella commented, "As for the IP ownership, frankly, after what we’d just been through with Activision, owning the IP we were going to create was important to us. Unfortunately, THQ did not want to agree to that,” he said.
