What Is Bungie Working On?

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jan 11, 2011 at 09:03 AM

Recently Bungie has been busy registering domain names, which could pertain to the new project it's working on for Activision. So what are the names and what could they possibly mean? Read on for our shockingly in-depth and totally stupid analysis.

Superannuation has sniffed out four possible titles that Bungie has registered. Here they are, along with some unfounded speculation as to what each term could pertain to.

"Osiris"
The Egyptian god of the afterlife, the underworld, and the dead. Osiris is also associated with regeneration and rebirth. Here's a fun fact about Osiris: Osiris became god of the underworld thanks to the devotion of his wife Isis, who bandaged him up and buried him after he was killed and torn to pieces by his brother Set. The only problem? He wasn't completely whole, as a fish had already eaten his wang. I'm not sure if he got that back when he became a god, but being in charge of the underworld is pretty bad-ass, so he has that going for him.

What are the odds you'll be playing a game based on a wangless Egyptian god with an eternal grudge against marine life? Probably not very good -- but we can hope against hope.

"Seven Seraphs"
A seraph is a celestial being that pops up in Judaic and Christian texts. Seraphim (the plural form of Seraph) literally means "burning ones," but they have been described in several different forms: As serpents (boring!),  as beings of light (a little cooler, I guess), and as fiery six-winged angel-like beings (now we're getting somewhere!). They are described in medieval texts as servants who use "a burning and all-consuming flame" to dispel the shadows of darkness. Also, they sing "holy, holy, holy" while taking care of god's throne...

Odds we'll be playing an action game featuring seven kickass fire angels who partake in bland singing minigames? Slightly better than the god who lost his junk.

"New Monarchy"
"New Monarchies" is a term used by historians to describe the monarchies created by European rulers in the 15th century. What was so great about them? They were more stable than old monarchies, and featured centralized governments. Wikipedia's entry on the subject gets even more boring from there, but I guess the era could make for some epic battles, including the War of the Roses, which is one of the greatest movies ever made.

Odds that this domain registration could somehow result in us playing a military RTS featuring voiceovers by Danny DeVito? 90%.

"Dead Orbit"
The final domain registration from Bungie turns up no information, other than a crappy flash clone of Asteroids. Based purely on our genius intellect, however, we know that things usually orbit other things in space, and Bungie has a history of creating sci-fi games set in space. Pretty compelling, huh?

Odds that Bungie is working on some kind of epic sci-fi action game that may or may not be called Dead Orbit? Possible.

So, which of these abominations would you like to see Bungie work on?
