3DS Not Harmful To Kids In Moderation, Say Doctors

by Adam Biessener on Jan 05, 2011 at 11:05 AM

The American Optometric Association has released a statement proclaiming Nintendo's upcoming handheld to not be an area of concern for worried parents.

The AOA, an industry group for optometrists, said in the statement that "3D in movies, TV and even 3D on Nintendo's 3DS isn't necessarily bad for adults or children." The release goes on to say that use of 3D technology like the 3DS or 3D TVs can help to uncover eyesight issues that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Though parents of any child with vision problems should obviously consult their optometrist before allowing the child to use devices like the 3DS, the press release states, "Children younger than 6 can use the 3DS in 3D mode if their visual system is developing normally."

Props to Nintendo for playing it safe on this one and being up-front with its cautions to parents regarding the 3DS, but it seems that the handheld is less risky than the company had feared.

Feel free to link your parents back to this news post when they tell you that you can't have a 3DS because it'll make you go cross-eyed. They didn't actually have to walk uphill both ways to school when they were your age, either.
