Sega Spawned Shadow The Hedgehog For US Gamers

by Tim Turi on Dec 17, 2010 at 07:50 AM

Shadow the Hedgehog’s metacritic score hovers around 50. Suffice it to say, the dark doppleganger with a 'tude wasn’t very popular with anyone. Sega is now confirming what you may have already guessed: the failed 2001 hedgehog shooter was geared towards trigger-happy US gamers.

Speaking with Official Nintendo Magazine, Sonic developer Takashi Iizuka explains that Sega wished for the Japanese studio to continue work on traditional Sonic games, and for the US studio to work on something for Western audiences.

"That background generated the Shadow game as he appeared from Sonic Adventure,” says Iizuka. “We wanted to offer other game systems to attract a different audience from traditional Sonic fans. In the US, first and third-person shooters were popular and we decided to go with a character who could work with them."

So that’s why that crappy game was made.
