Microsoft initially took a strong stance against hacking and modding of its Kinect motion controller, but now it's changed its tune in order to embrace the creativity springing out of the indie community. A company rep says Microsoft will eventually add Kinect support to its free XNA Studio development toolset.

During an interview with NPR's Talk of the Nation, Xbox director of incubation (how's that for a title?) Alex Kipman said, "There's no Kinect support through XNA today, but that is something that we will support in the future.

"I get YouTube videos on an hourly basis of people doing cool, neat, creative experiences based on using Kinect on PC," Kipman continued. He also went on to stress that hackers and modders would not get in trouble with Microsoft.

If this news comes to pass, it's great for the indie development scene. Given all the great indie XBLA titles we've seen in recent years, we can't wait to see what could be done with Kinect.
